Checkwood specialise in timber and damp surveys of buildings and other timber structures for architects, engineers and other construction professionals. We provide information on damp problems , and the decay state of structural timbers. Put simply, we tell you the extent of timber decay, the decay type and cause, whether the decay is active or inactive (i.e. historic), and the extent of any repairs that are required. We can recommend remedial works that avoid chemical remedial treatments, resulting in significant cost savings.
We offer:
- Timber condition surveys
- In-situ timber strength assessments for structural calculation purposes
- Damp surveys including masonry moisture profiling and laboratory analysis
- Remedial recommendations and detailing advice
- Timber specifications and general timber consultancy
- CPD presentations
- Timber species identifications
- Wood floor inspections
- Expert witness services
Our services can be tailored to suit your budget. We provide value for money, independent reports on time and on budget. Checkwood reports can then be used for QS purposes, or as a basis for tenders from contractors. We aim to issue our reports within five working days of a site visit.
Barn conversions
All timbers in this refurbished barn had widespread insect damage. The damage was not structurally significant, and the attack was no longer active as the wood was too dry. No chemical insecticidal treatments were required.
Agricultural buildings
Oak structures such as roofs and walls often contain some insect damage or fungal decay, but this may not be structurally significant. Checkwood establish the type and extent of any damage, and give recommendations for repairs.
Church roof timbers
Using mini-bore decay detection drilling, Checkwood carry out condition surveys of large section timbers for any insect damage, fungal decay or on-going damp problems.
